> about me:

I’m NH, a computer science student who doesn’t like the real world so much. A few of my favourite things include: gardening, ghosts and Sonnet 94.

I mainly write romance, drama and psychological horror. My plots focus on navigating complex interpersonal relationships, and always seek to find the most hopeful ending in a tragic situation.

My favourite kind of character is treated harshly and repeatedly discouraged, but triumphs over all of it to empower themselves.

When you are willing to accept yourself and the path you take, and are surrounded with love and support, then you have found your happiest ending. ( ^ ‿ ^ )

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.

Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…

…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

TW: medical, drugs

Okay I think some of the whump community needs a quick reminder that sedatives, hypnotics, tranquillizers, analgesics, and anaesthetics are completely different things.

Here's a quick rundown (disclaimer that I am neither a doctor nor a whumper):

Sedative: A sedative drug decreases activity, moderates excitement, and calms the recipient

Hypnotic: A drug that produces drowsiness and facilitates the onset and maintenance of a state of sleep

Tranquilizer: A drug that calms and relieves anxiety

Analgesics: A drug designed to control pain

Anaesthetics: A substance that causes lack of feeling or awareness, dulling pain to permit surgery and other painful procedures

As you can see, yes, they often overlap and, yes, many drugs are both but if you are sedating a patient for surgery... good luck.

Some examples (under the cut because of specific drug mentionsand the length of this post) for good measure:

this, and pretty sure sure diazepam is also an analgesic – or at least it's prescribed as one, for dealing with really severe pains

weirdstrangeandawful

Nope! That’s what I find really cool about benzodiazepines: they’ve got so many properties of analgesics but they actually don’t have an analgesic effect! I am definitely not a good source for this, but diazepam is probably prescribed for severe pain because of its effect as a muscle relaxant?

nh8-writes

thank you so much for the explanation! that’s most likely why – I was thinking about it based on a family member’s prescription, but clearly there’s more to it than I thought :D

Im sick of people trashing the 'damsel in distress. That simply means a girl who can't save herself. If you want to write a story about a girl who saves the day do so, but don't stomp on those who can't help themselves that's not what heroes do.

maxknightley

when people are criticizing the "damsel in distress" as a trope, they are criticizing a broader pattern of women being treated as objects rather than subjects of stories. they are not telling an actual literal princess who has been locked in an actual literal tower that she's a little bitch.

every story that has a tomboy get "fixed" and find true love is fucking crime against humanity. she's not embracing her inner femininity, she wasn't suppressing it out of insecurity. you just hate all that's good in the world.

also, a character having a revelation of "wow i can be strong AND feminine!" doesn't show feminine girls they can be independent, athletic, outspoken, etc. if that was your intention you'd be telling a story of a feminine girl finding her voice and getting into athletics.

you're showing independent, outspoken, athletic, or otherwise gnc girls that they have to be feminine and i hate you for it.

And it’s not like other languages don’t offer the ability to switch registers; many do, in various different ways, often not easily translated into English.

But most other languages don’t do this by literally switching which sub-language of themselves you’re using.

It also makes it somewhat more ambiguous in English—in other languages (at least, the ones I’m familiar with; I won’t try to make a universal claim!), switching registers is an explicit thing. You’ll use the informal form, or you’ll use the formal. In English, because it’s just using different words with roughly the same definitions, in a language richly supplied with synonyms, it’s not that hard to, say, write an introduction for a character who’s speaking primarily in the upper, Latinate, register—but without genuinely intending to be presenting themselves as formal, educated, or snobbish.

And I just think that’s neat.

why is your oc still alive?

because he quit his job and pursued what he really cared about and he wasn't even that good at it but he was able to become happy again and it led him to finding a space where he belonged and friends who would support him and he could open up to those people rather than bottling up his feelings out of necessity and his world suddenly became a liveable place oc: nate knife
